angel in disguise.

Rona has only an average mother, if you didn’t look closely, you might even think she was well, a good mother.

how do you even define ‘good’ in mothering?

Rona only had one son, a son she dearly loved,

a son whom she’ll lose sleep over,
a son whom she’ll sacrifice time for,
a son whom she’ll feed when he cries…

Rona did all she could for her son, made sure he went to school, made sure he ate, give a listening ear to her extremely talkative son…

but Rona was a tired lady, tired from work, tired from mothering. Sometimes she takes it out on her son, sometimes it ends up arguing with her husband…

Rona’s son was named e, not the big letter ‘E’, but you know, the tiny ‘e’… because she looked at the baby boy and said: “you’ll always be my little baby boy.”

e grew up being an average boy, Rona didn’t allow e to roam to much outside, fearing something bad might befall him without supervision. but e still had the chance to cycle on the void deck, and still played games in school.

despite Rona’s protectiveness, e still got into trouble, when Rona wasn’t looking out for e, he would sneak out and play. one day e got into trouble with a friend, they were caught shoplifting from a major departmental store.

Rona had problems controlling her anger then, and immediately took a cane and lashed out at e.

Threats of disowning e flew out Rona’s mouth, and the threats flooded e’s mind…

It wasn’t Rona’s fault, but you know what they say, ‘hurt people, hurt people’. Rona was hurt before and thus it just spilled over to her son.

e was never a very rebellious boy, but he always wanted to run away from home. One day, Rona got really angry and chased e out of the office. e ran away, afraid, but he fought back the tears, until he got to the toilet and cried so badly till he was hoarse. e was only 9.

when Rona found e, now wandering around the shopping centre, Rona gave him a tight slap, and dragged him back to the office, and with a cane repeatedly gave strokes and strokes of pain to the now confused and angry boy.

now e was a young teenager, having done badly in his major school leaving examination, he entered a school that wasn’t in his choice of schools, and had a bad reputation.

by the way, e never left home.. after the last incident, he didn’t want to anymore.

e was quite a loner in secondary school, he always hung around the corners or at the back of the class, either sleeping or day dreaming. Not having much friends.

but all these changed, when Rona made e go for a youth camp organized by the youth ministry of the church she attended. e was reluctant to go for camp, much more a camp overseas.

He didn’t want to meet other people, he thought following his mother to church on Sunday was good enough, he had heard of God but he never really wanted to get to know this ‘God’ he heard the Pastor preached every Sunday..

So e was forced to sign up for the youth camp, and like all camps, there was the camp briefing. e made his way to the briefing by himself, not knowing what to expect. reluctant and lost, e felt very uncomfortable in the briefing.

and camp came and e finally made some friends, these friends encouraged e to be more outgoing and taught other ways to have fun…and e did have fun..

e came back from camp, changed, he missed camp so much that he cried at home when he returned (unknown to Rona though).

but this was the defining moment for e.

e continued to attend the youth service, and with each youth service e was changed.

Rona noticed changed in her son too, but Rona was much to busy at work and with looking after the house to acknowledge the change.

e never really spoke to his mother or father in long detailed chats, he was always brief and fleeting. e never really liked talk about his problems to his parents, and the words ‘sorry’ and ‘I love you’ were the hardest words to say to them.

after sometime in the youth ministry, e grew up, now a fine young man, though he still didn’t talk about his problems to his parents, he constantly would yell every evening.. ‘goodnight mom and dad, I love you’ before closing his bedroom door and heading to sleep.

Rona, now slightly aged, had headaches and little ailments from time to time, e would always stand by the door and wait, when Rona was asleep, he would lay his hands on his mother’s hand and pray, sometimes Rona would be in pain and e would kneel by her bed hold her hands and prayed.
e would constantly shower Rona with little messages saying ‘I love you have a great day at work’

and to Rona, e was like an angel in disguise.
